Laura Caviani serves as Director of the Jazz Program and Senior Lecturer in Jazz Piano at Carleton College in Minnesota, where she has been teaching since 2003. She directs the Jazz Ensemble and coordinates all jazz chamber groups and classes, demonstrating leadership in the department's jazz studies program.
Her research interests focus on jazz piano performance, composition, and improvisation, with particular expertise in creating contemporary arrangements of traditional works and setting poetry to music. Caviani has set works by Edna St. Vincent Millay, Shakespeare, Rumi, and 19th century activists Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony to music for various ensembles.
Her discography shows consistent output over three decades, with recordings spanning solo piano works, trio performances, holiday jazz, and political commentary through music. Her work demonstrates evolution from traditional jazz forms to more contemporary and socially engaged compositions.

Caviani has been an influential educator, adapting during the pandemic by transforming Carleton's performance spaces into multi-room recording studios where students developed audio/video recording skills. She maintains an active performance schedule, with recent engagements including the 'Songs of Justice' program featuring works by Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell.
