Laura Castañeda

Laura Castañeda is a Professor of Professional Practice of Journalism and Associate Dean of Community and Culture at the USC Annenberg School of Journalism. She has been a faculty member since 2000, previously teaching at Temple University and working as a journalist for major outlets like The San Francisco Chronicle and Associated Press. Her research focuses on diversity in journalism, particularly the Latino experience, and pedagogical innovation in media education.

Awards include the 2019 Barry Bingham Sr. Fellowship for outstanding journalism education and recognition as a 'Disruptive Educator' by CUNY's Tow-Knight Center. She has served leadership roles in NAHJ and Report for America's advisory board.

Teaching focuses on reporting, writing, and diversity, with courses like Experiential Journalism in Latin America and Directed Research. Her work bridges journalism practice with advocacy for underrepresented groups.
