Dr. Laura Bier is an Associate Professor in the School of History and Sociology at Georgia Institute of Technology. She specializes in the social and cultural history of 20th-century Egypt, with a focus on gender history and state socialism. Her work has been supported by grants including the Fulbright and Fulbright-Hays awards.
Education: PhD in History and Middle East Studies from New York University.
Research Interests: Current projects include studies on women in the Arab Spring, domestic technology in Egypt, and food history. Her notable publication Revolutionary Womanhood (Stanford University Press, 2011) examines feminist movements under Nasser's regime. Her work appears in Feminist Studies, Gender and History, and edited volumes on Middle Eastern family structures and the Bandung Conference.
