Laura B. Bartell is a Professor of Law at Wayne State University's School of Law, where she has taught since 1996. Her expertise lies in bankruptcy law, secured transactions, and creditors' rights. She holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School and a B.A. from Stanford University. Before academia, she practiced law at Shearman & Sterling in New York, specializing in bankruptcy and bank financing, and clerked for Judge Alvin B. Rubin of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
Professor Bartell's research focuses on bankruptcy law intricacies, including debtor-creditor dynamics, bankruptcy court jurisdiction, and statutory interpretation. She has published extensively in journals like the American Bankruptcy Law Journal and authored seminal works such as Visualizing Bankruptcy and Visualizing Secured Transactions, which use visual aids to demystify complex legal concepts. Her recent scholarship addresses topics like §707(b) abuse tests, Stern claims, and motions to withdraw references in bankruptcy cases.
