Laura Assanmal Peláez is a part-time faculty member at New York University (NYU), serving as an adjunct professor in the Education Studies Program at NYU Steinhardt and an adjunct instructor at NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study. She is a PhD candidate in Sociology of Education at NYU Steinhardt’s School of Culture, Education and Human Development. Her research focuses on the educational experiences of South and Central American youth in New York City public schools and students facing housing insecurity.
Education: B.A. in Social Research & Public Policy (minor in Political Science) from NYU Abu Dhabi (2021).
Research Interests: Laura employs urban ethnography to study systemic inequities in education, particularly for marginalized youth. She examines intersections between immigration status, housing instability, and access to quality education. Her work integrates policy analysis with community-based research to advocate for equitable educational practices.
Awards: Recipient of the Urban Democracy Lab’s Doctoral Fellowship in Urban Practice, supporting her applied research on urban education challenges.
Roles & Affiliations: Current researcher at the Metropolitan Center for the Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools. Member of NYU’s incoming Faculty First Look Fellows cohort. Previously interned with ENLACE (Bronx Institute), Washington Office on Latin America, and volunteered as a teaching assistant at Brooklyn International High School.
Labs/Teams: Active in NYU’s Metropolitan Center, focusing on equity-driven education reforms. Engaged in interdisciplinary collaborations bridging sociology, policy, and community organizing.
