Lars Weinehall is a Professor in Epidemiology and Family Medicine at the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health, Umeå University. He is a senior academic with extensive experience in public health interventions and policy, notably leading the Västerbotten Intervention Programme (VIP) from 1985–2007. His work focuses on chronic disease prevention, health inequities, and the integration of digital technologies into healthcare. He has served on key national committees, including the Swedish Parliamentary Public Health Commission (1996–2000) and the National Board of Health and Welfare’s expert committees for lifestyle guidelines (2008–2023).
His research interests include behavioral change strategies, the implementation of evidence-based practices in primary care, and the use of national quality registries to improve elderly care. He leads projects such as STAR-C, exploring digital coaching for sustainable health behavior change, and VIPVIZA, a randomized controlled trial for cardiovascular risk communication.
Key contributions include pioneering community-based prevention programs, analyzing socioeconomic health disparities, and evaluating healthcare system improvements. His publications span epidemiological cohort studies, implementation science, and cross-national comparisons of healthcare systems. He emphasizes translating research into clinical practice and policy.
