Lars Liljegren

Lars Liljegren serves as a Lecturer in English at Linköping University's Department for Language, Culture and Interaction (SKI) within the Department of Culture and Society (IKOS) at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He has taught English language and literature courses continuously since 1999.

Liljegren's research specializes in Translation Studies with particular focus on censorship mechanisms and handling of banned words in literary translation. His doctoral dissertation analyzed censored English translations of August Strindberg's works, examining how Victorian-era moral constraints altered sexual content and provocative elements. His methodology integrates polysystem theory, imagology, and actor-network theory to understand translator decision-making within cultural contexts.

His recent publications reveal consistent thematic patterns examining how culturally sensitive material—particularly racial slurs in American classics and sexual content in Scandinavian literature—gets transformed through translation. This work demonstrates how historical censorship practices continue to affect modern readers' understanding of original texts, especially when outdated translations remain standard in academic curricula.

Administratively, Liljegren served as Director of Studies for English at IKOS from 2020-2021 and has coordinated English instruction for the Subject Teacher Program since 2000 (currently shared with Nigel Musk). His teaching portfolio spans English grammar, translation theory, literary and cultural studies, language didactics, international business English, and intercultural communication.
