Larry J. Livingston

Larry J. Livingston serves as Chair of the Department of Conducting and Professor at the Flora L. Thornton School of Music, University of Southern California. An internationally recognized conductor and educator, he maintains active leadership in major orchestras and music education initiatives across five continents.

His educational background includes:

• Graduate studies at the University of Michigan under Laurence Livingston, Elizabeth Green, William Revelli, Rafael Druian, and Herbert Zipper
• Doctoral studies at the University of California, San Diego

Professor Livingston's scholarly focus encompasses:

Administratively, Livingston raised over $100 million during his tenure as Dean of the USC Thornton School of Music (1986-2002), securing the Flora Thornton naming gift. He previously served as Vice President and Music Director of the New England Conservatory and Dean of Rice University's Shepherd School of Music. His educational initiatives include directing Guitar Center's national ALL IN program (2008-2015) and chairing the Quincy Jones Musiq Consortium Education Committee.

As a conductor, he has led the Houston Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic Green Umbrella Series, and major orchestras in Poland, France, Germany, and Japan, collaborating with artists including Itzhak Perlman, Yehudi Menuhin, and Keiko Abe across 20+ US states' All-State ensembles.
