Larry Goves is a British composer and academic serving as Head of the School of Composition at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). He holds a BMus from RNCM and a PhD from Southampton University. His roles include Composition Lecturer at RNCM, Composition Tutor for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, and board member of vocal ensemble EXAUDI.
His research focuses on acoustic, electronic, and electroacoustic composition, emphasizing creative collaboration methodologies and performer-interaction dynamics. Notable works include Crow rotations (2023), a song-cycle with Juliet Fraser and The House of Bedlam, and The Rules (2013) commissioned by the National Youth Orchestra. His music is performed internationally by ensembles like the London Sinfonietta and BBC Philharmonic.
Awards include the Jerwood-Aldeburgh Opera Fellowship and a Paul Hamlyn Award. Teaching spans undergraduate to PhD levels in composition, electronic music, and performance studies. Current research projects involve collaborations with the BBC Philharmonic and saxophonist Anthony Brown.
Advising PhD students explore topics like postdramatic theatre in music and cinematic techniques in composition. Upcoming works include music to help our children sleep (3) with ARKEnsemble (2024) and Crow rotations at King’s Place (2025).
