Lara J. Gamble serves as Research Associate Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Washington and Assistant Director of NESAC/BIO.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, University of California, Santa Cruz (1990)
- Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry, University of Washington (1996)
Her research pioneers imaging secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) with cluster ion sources to achieve sub-micron and 3D chemical imaging of biological systems. This work enables molecular-level analysis of tumor microenvironments, lipid metabolomics in cancer progression, tissue repair mechanisms, and cellular chemical dynamics. She focuses on developing specialized sample preparation protocols, advanced data processing algorithms, and analytical frameworks to translate these surface analysis techniques for biomedical applications.
Prior to her current role, she conducted NEXAFS studies of biomolecule-surface interfaces during post-doctoral research at NESAC/BIO, followed by industry experience developing surface modification technologies for biochips at Zyomyx, Inc. and research at the Space Dynamics Laboratory. She rejoined the University of Washington in 2003 as Scientific Research Coordinator, becoming Assistant Research Professor in 2004 and advancing to Associate Research Professor in 2011.
