Lance Roberts

Dr. Lance A. Roberts serves as Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs and is a Professor at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. He previously headed the Department of Mining Engineering and Management and brings industry experience from his role as Senior Vice President at RESPEC Consultants. His educational background includes B.S. and M.S. degrees from South Dakota Mines and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Roberts' research expertise spans geotechnical engineering with focus areas in rock mechanics, deep foundation systems, underground storage solutions, and time-dependent behavior of geological materials. His work has been funded by state and federal agencies including the Department of Energy and Federal Highway Administration. His publications address practical engineering challenges in mining, energy storage, and infrastructure development.
