Lance Manuel is the Texas Atomic Energy Research Foundation Professor of Engineering and Professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering (CAEE) at The University of Texas at Austin. He serves as Associate Chair for Civil Engineering and Editor-in-Chief of the ASME Journal of Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering. His expertise spans mechanics, uncertainty quantification, and simulation in engineering, with a focus on structural reliability, wind energy systems, and offshore platforms. He holds advanced degrees from Stanford University, the University of Virginia, and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.
Research interests include random vibration, wind turbine dynamics, probabilistic seismic hazard analysis, and climate change adaptation. He leads projects funded by NSF, USGS, DOE, and industry partners. Notable awards include the ASCE Stephen D. Bechtel, Jr. Energy Award and recognition for teaching excellence. He advises numerous graduate and undergraduate students and collaborates internationally with institutions like Aarhus University and Lund University.
Manuel chairs editorial boards for journals such as Energies and Wind Engineering. His recent work addresses floating offshore wind turbine systems, fatigue damage modeling, and sustainable reuse of decommissioned platforms. He actively participates in technical committees for ASCE, ASME, and NASEM, contributing to standards for wind and marine energy systems.
