Dr. Lance Baumgard is a Distinguished Professor and Norman L. Jacobson Endowed Professor in Dairy Nutrition at Iowa State University's Department of Animal Science. His research focuses on physiological and metabolic responses to environmental stressors, particularly heat stress in livestock. He holds a PhD from Cornell University (2002), an MS from University of Minnesota (1998), and a BS from University of Minnesota (1995).
Key research interests include heat stress mitigation strategies, dairy nutrition optimization, and the interaction between environmental factors and livestock health. He investigates metabolic flexibility, inflammation markers, and nutritional interventions to enhance livestock resilience. His work integrates molecular, cellular, and whole-animal approaches to understand stress physiology.
Recent studies examine heat stress effects on cardiac function, skeletal muscle biochemistry, and reproductive systems in pigs and dairy cows. He also explores the additive impacts of contaminants (e.g., PFCs, aflatoxins) and heat stress on livestock health. His findings inform sustainable agricultural practices and animal welfare strategies.
Dr. Baumgard was honored as a Fellow of the American Dairy Science Association® in 2024. His lab collaborates on projects involving gastrointestinal permeability, endotoxin challenges, and mitochondrial function under stress conditions. Ongoing work addresses translational applications of metabolic insights to improve dairy and swine production systems.
