Dr. Lan Deng is Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Michigan. Her research examines housing systems, real estate economics, and urban development policies, with extensive work on affordable housing mechanisms in both the U.S. and China. She specializes in Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) sustainability, housing provident funds, and market-state interactions in urban development.
Her research portfolio includes comparative analyses of housing reforms, neighborhood revitalization strategies in distressed markets like Detroit, and evaluations of China's evolving real estate industry. Recent publications (2024-2025) address America's affordability crisis and structural transformations in China's housing production systems. Her work combines policy evaluation with empirical analysis of market dynamics.
Deng serves as North American Editor for Housing Studies and previously directed the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies (2020-2022). She leads research on the long-term viability of subsidized housing and teaches courses on public economics, housing policy, and fiscal planning.
