Lan A. Li is an Assistant Professor in the Department of the History of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, with joint appointments in the East Asian Studies Program and the Department of the History of Science and Technology. She holds a PhD from MIT and previously served as a Presidential Scholar in Society and Neuroscience at Columbia University. Her research focuses on the history of East Asian medicine, global Chinese medicine, and the intersection of race and healthcare access. She is currently co-director of the Online Program in the History of Medicine and Associate Director of the Center for Black Brown Queer Studies, leading the Medicine Race Democracy Lab. Her work includes film projects exploring acupuncture practices in São Paulo and transnational histories of numbness. She has also co-founded exhibitions like Metaphors of the Mind and contributes to academic journals like Asian Medicine.
Education: PhD in History, Anthropology, and Science Technology and Society Studies from MIT (2016). Key roles include editor of eikon for positionspolitics.org and co-host of the metastasis podcast. Collaborations span institutions in Asia, South America, and the U.S., emphasizing community health and integrative medicine.
