Dr. Lama Ghazi is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She holds appointments in the School of Public Health and multiple interdisciplinary centers, including the Minority Health & Research Center and the Nephrology Research & Training Center. Her research focuses on chronic disease prevention, particularly hypertension and chronic kidney disease, with an emphasis on health disparities and implementation science. She obtained her MD from the American University of Beirut and her PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Minnesota, followed by postdoctoral training at Yale University and UAB.
Dr. Ghazi's education includes a MD (2014) and a PhD in Epidemiology (2020). Her expertise spans clinical and translational research, leveraging real-world data to improve chronic disease management. She teaches advanced epidemiology courses, including EPI798 (Doctoral Directed Research) and EPI790 (Doctoral Seminar).
Her research interests integrate digital health technologies and implementation science to address disparities in hypertension and kidney disease outcomes. Key areas include sepsis-associated AKI, blood pressure control trends, and the impact of neighborhood social determinants on health. She has advised numerous students and contributed to high-impact studies published in journals like Critical Care, Hypertension, and American Journal of Kidney Diseases.
Her work emphasizes leveraging machine learning and epidemiological methods to improve clinical decision-making, particularly in acute care settings. She collaborates on pragmatic trials, such as the PROMPT series, to enhance medication adherence and guideline compliance in cardiovascular and kidney disease management.
