Dr. Laine Scales is a Professor of Social Work at Baylor University and co-director of the online PhD program in the Garland School of Social Work. She holds a PhD in Higher Education from the University of Kentucky, an MSW from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research focuses on doctoral education, Baptist women in social work and missions, and rural social work. She has authored/co-authored over 10 books and 50 articles, and was honored as Baylor's Master Teacher (2016) and Centennial Professor (2019).
- Key roles: Faculty Fellow in Learning Design, co-creator of Online Faculty Institute, and founder of Good Neighbor Settlement House
- Leadership: 15 years as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, co-director of Baylor in Oxford study abroad program
Research emphasizes historical settlement houses and their modern applications, Baptist women's contributions to social work, and online pedagogy. She teaches ethics, qualitative research, and community practice, while mentoring faculty and students through programs like DOTS and DIVE.
Awards include Baylor’s highest teaching honor and recognition for her work in faculty development and community initiatives.
