Edward C. Polson is an Associate Professor at the Diana R. Garland School of Social Work, Baylor University. He joined Baylor in 2014 and focuses on religion, spirituality, civic engagement, and social work education. His research examines the intersection of religion and civic life, including how congregational dynamics influence community involvement and racial attitudes.
Dr. Polson holds a PhD, MA, MSW, MDiv, and BA from Baylor University and Mississippi College. His work bridges academic research and applied projects with nonprofits in Texas, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania.
His research interests center on civil society, organizational structures, diversity, and integrating spirituality into social work practice. Notable studies include analyses of MSW programs’ curricula regarding religion/spirituality and the role of multiracial congregations in fostering social bridging.
Publications highlight themes like congregational composition’s impact on racial attitudes, the efficacy of spiritual competency training in mental health, and reimagining settlement houses for modern communities. Recent work emphasizes national surveys on clients’ and educators’ religious/spiritual practices.
Dr. Polson’s applied focus extends to family caregiver resilience, gratitude’s role in Alzheimer’s care, and the ethical integration of faith in clinical practice.
