Laia Darder

Dr Laia Darder is a Senior Lecturer in Languages and Cultures at the Sheffield Business School, part of the College of Business, Technology and Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University. She is affiliated with the Culture and Creativity Research Institute. Her teaching spans applied linguistics, cultural studies, European studies, intercultural competence, and sociolinguistics.

Qualifications include a PhD in Languages Studies (University of Sheffield, 2013), a BA in Languages Studies (University of Sheffield, 2005), and a 'Llicenciatura' in Catalan Philology (Universitat de les Illes Balears, 2003). She holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (Sheffield Hallam University, 2015).

Her research explores sociolinguistic dynamics in Spanish, Catalan, and English, focusing on language as a reflection of power structures, prestige, and social change. Key projects include analyzing language use in the Balearic Islands and studying dubbing practices' impact on racialized stereotypes.

She secured a 2015 grant for a film subtitling project enhancing student employability and received the Young Researchers International Award (2008).
