Lai-Tze Fan is an Associate Professor at the University of Bergen (Norway) and the University of Waterloo (Canada), holding a dual role as Associate Professor II at the Center for Digital Narrative (CDN) and Canada Research Chair of Technology and Social Change. Her work bridges sociology, literature, and AI ethics, focusing on digital narrative systems, AI storytelling, and societal impacts of technology.
Research interests include computational narrative, electronic literature, misinformation dynamics, and equitable AI design through her leadership of The U&AI Lab at Waterloo. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Electronic Literature Organization and U Waterloo’s TRuST network, addressing trust and misinformation in AI.
Her recent lecture at UiB explored AI storytelling’s cultural and political implications, emphasizing critical engagement with genAI’s limitations and biases. She collaborates internationally, integrating artistic and computational methods to advance digital narrative studies.
