Dr. Laetitia Calabrese is a Senior Lecturer in French Language Studies and Director of Student Support for the School of Languages, Linguistics and Film (SLLF) at Queen Mary University of London. She holds a PhD in Linguistics (English Phonetics) from the University of Provence, Aix-Marseille, France. Her research focuses on prosodic characteristics of Welsh English, examining the influence of the Welsh language on English spoken in Wales. She previously held roles including Temporary Language Teaching & Research Assistant (ATER) at the University of Provence (2004–2007), French Language Teaching Assistant (2008–2010), and interim Coordinator of French Language Studies (2012–2013).
Education:
- Licence (BA equivalent) in English Language, Literature & Civilization (LLCE Anglais), University of Provence
- Maîtrise (MA equivalent) in English LLCE (specializing in Phonetics)
- DEA in Language Sciences (MPhil equivalent)
- PhD in Linguistics (English Phonetics, 2011)
Research interests include prosody, bilingualism, and sociolinguistic variation, particularly in Welsh English. Her work combines acoustic analysis and perception studies to explore how Welsh influences English phonetic patterns. She has presented findings at international conferences and published on intonation, rhythm, and final lengthening in Welsh English.
Teaching includes French language courses at various proficiency levels, including specialized modules for law undergraduates. She also organizes annual social events to strengthen departmental community, such as Christmas gatherings and end-of-year shows.
