University of Texas at San Antonioمعرفی
Lacy Barton is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neuroscience, Developmental and Regenerative Biology within the College of Sciences at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Her research focuses on understanding the developmental biology of primordial germ cells—the precursors to eggs and sperm—using Drosophila, mouse, and cell culture models. She is committed to advancing scientific literacy and expanding access to research careers.
Research Interests:
- Cell signaling and migration in germ cells
- Ovary and testis development
- Primordial germ cell dynamics
- Reproductive developmental biology
- Impact of parental age on next-generation germ cell development
- Germ cell tumor formation
Her recent publications highlight work on juvenile hormone signaling, germ cell migration, and developmental timing in Drosophila, with articles appearing in Current Biology and Development. These studies often involve collaborations with leading scientists such as Ruth Lehmann and Ryusuke Niwa. Her lab uses advanced techniques including single-cell RNA sequencing and confocal microscopy.
Scientific Awards and Recognition:
- American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR) Junior Faculty Award
- Voelcker Fund Young Investigator Award
- UTSA seed grant for interdisciplinary research with biomedical engineering
- Mentoring students who have won NSF GRFP Honorable Mention, MARC fellowships, and SURF at Stanford
Lacy Barton actively mentors a diverse group of trainees, including undergraduates, master’s students, and postdocs. Many of her students have been accepted into top graduate programs and have received national recognition. Her lab fosters a collaborative and inclusive environment, emphasizing both scientific excellence and professional development. The Barton Lab has also engaged in public outreach through events like Viva Science SA, promoting community interest in genetics and developmental biology.
