Kyung Hwa Shon is a cross-disciplinary artist, researcher, and educator affiliated with the Royal College of Art (RCA), School of Arts & Humanities. She holds roles as a Tutor (Research) in the Graduate Diploma Art & Design and a visiting lecturer in MA Painting and MA Sculpture. Her PhD in Painting (2019) from RCA follows an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA from Hong-Ik University. She was a Starr Scholar at the Royal Academy of Arts (2011–2012).
Her research explores urban landscapes, perception, and identity through interdisciplinary art practices, blending painting, installation, sound, and digital media. Key themes include subject-object dualism, fluid spatial poetics, and the interplay of absence/presence in urban experiences. She leads international collaborations like 'IN // BETWEEN: Kharkiv and London' (UK/Ukraine Season 2022–23) and 'Re- & De-' (with Onomichi City University, Japan), addressing decentralized pedagogy and post-pandemic cultural dynamics.
Notable projects include public art installations for Meta’s London offices and Kharkiv, Ukraine, emphasizing urban rhythms and fractured sensory experiences. Awards include grants from the British Council, Chungnam Arts, and Seoul Foundation. She mentors at Turps Art School and contributes to RCA’s Sites & Situations Research Cluster, focusing on materialist and imaginative dimensions of urban territories.
