Kyriacos Kalli is a Professor at Cyprus University of Technology, former Department Chairperson, and member of the University's Governance Council and Cyprus Organisation for Standardisation Board. He holds a B.Sc. (Hons) and Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Kent, UK, specializing in optical fibres. His research focuses on optical fibre lasers and sensors, femtosecond laser micro-fabrication, and plasmonics. He has authored over 280 publications and co-authored a seminal textbook on fibre Bragg gratings.
Prof. Kalli's work includes advancements in polymer optical fibre sensors for civil infrastructure monitoring, gamma-radiation-tuned sensors, and quantum communication networks. He has organized major conferences like EWOFS 2019 and WSOF 2017, and chairs SPIE's Microstructure and Specialty Optical Fibre Conference. His recognitions include Senior Member status at the Optical Society of America (OSA) and a 2012 Photonics Europe Plenary Speaker role.
His sensor innovations span biomedical applications (e.g., brain temperature monitoring), aerospace torque measurement, and environmental sensing of pollutants like acetone. Recent research emphasizes femtosecond laser inscription techniques for fibre gratings and monolithic laser development. Kalli's contributions bridge fundamental physics with applied technologies in telecommunications, energy, and healthcare sectors.
