Kyra Nichols holds the Violette Verdy and Kathy Ziliak Anderson Chair in Ballet and serves as Professor of Music (Ballet) at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. A former principal dancer of the New York City Ballet, she performed for 33 years before retiring in 2007 as the company's longest-serving ballerina.
Her dance training began in Berkeley, California, under her mother Sally Streets (a former NYCB member), followed by summers at the School of American Ballet starting at age 13. She joined NYCB full-time at 15, rising from corps de ballet to principal dancer by 1979 under George Balanchine's direction.
Professor Nichols' expertise spans classical and contemporary ballet repertoire, with research interests focused on:

Her career featured collaborations with Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, William Forsythe, and Christopher Wheeldon across diverse roles from "Tschaikovsky Piano Concerto Number 2" to "Liebeslieder Walzer." She toured globally including U.S. Information Agency performances in China (1981), guest appearances at the Metropolitan Opera, and film credits in Warner Brothers' "George Balanchine's The Nutcracker" (1993).
