With over 25 years of academic experience in teaching and research, she is a registered pharmacist who has made significant contributions to the field of pharmacy education and practice.
Professor Williams has held academic positions at both the University of Technology Sydney and The University of Sydney. Her current role as Professor and Head of Department began in January 2017, following her tenure as Associate Professor at UTS from July 2011 to January 2017. Prior to that, she served as Senior Lecturer, Lecturer, and Associate Lecturer at the University of Sydney from 1996 to 2011.
Professor Williams' research interests span several critical areas in pharmacy practice and education. Her primary focus is on consumer self-care and pharmacy's role in this domain, with particular emphasis on non-prescription drugs and the use of the Internet for health information. She has developed innovative methodologies for monitoring consumer use of non-prescription products and self-medication behavior. Her research also encompasses medication safety in aged care facilities, osteoporosis management in long-term care, pharmacist prescribing of contraception, and the application of nanoparticle technology in drug delivery systems for various conditions including respiratory diseases and dyslipidaemia.
Professor Williams' extensive publication record reveals several key trends in her research. Her work consistently addresses medication safety issues, particularly in vulnerable populations such as aged care residents. She has made significant contributions to understanding pharmacist prescribing models, especially regarding contraception and minor ailments. More recently, her research has expanded into nanomedicine applications for respiratory conditions and other chronic diseases. Her publications demonstrate a strong commitment to improving pharmacy practice through evidence-based approaches that enhance patient outcomes.
Professor Williams actively supervises Masters Research and PhD students, as indicated by her availability for student supervision. Her funded research portfolio is substantial, with numerous grants from organizations including the NSW Department of Health, Maridulu Budyari Gumal (The Sydney Partnership for Health, Education, Research and Enterprise), and industry partners like Pharmako Biotechnologies and DeAurora Pty Ltd. Current projects include investigations into liposomal curcumin for pulmonary disorders, quercetin nanoformulations for lung diseases, and pharmacist management of urinary tract infections and oral contraception.
Professor Williams leads several research teams focusing on medication safety in aged care, nanoparticle drug delivery systems, and digital health interventions in pharmacy practice. Her laboratory work involves in vitro pharmacological testing of novel drug formulations, particularly for respiratory conditions and osteoporosis management. She collaborates extensively with researchers across disciplines, including pharmacology, nanotechnology, and clinical medicine.
