Kylie Scales

Associate Professor Kylie Scales is an ARC DECRA Fellow at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC), located in Queensland, Australia. She holds dual roles as Associate Dean (Research) and Associate Professor in Animal Ecology within the School of Science, Technology and Engineering. Her research focuses on ecological responses to environmental variability, emphasizing spatial and movement ecology of marine vertebrates, fisheries sustainability, and climate change adaptation. She collaborates extensively with industry, government, CSIRO, and international organizations to develop real-world solutions for marine resource management.

Education: PhD Marine Science (Plymouth University), MSc (Exeter University), Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Exeter University), BSc Environmental Science (Plymouth University, First Class Honours).

Research interests include dynamic habitat modeling, ecological forecasting, and the application of interdisciplinary approaches to address climate change challenges. She has pioneered work on reducing fisheries bycatch through real-time environmental data integration. Awards include the DECRA Fellowship (2019), Advance Queensland Industry Research Fellowship (2019), and Vice-Chancellor's Excellence in Research Award (2017).

Her recent articles highlight advancements in ecological forecasting, fisheries adaptation to climate change, and the role of ocean fronts in marine megafauna conservation. She co-edits the journal Remote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation and contributed to the IPCC's 6th Assessment Report.

Advising: Supervised Jessica Bolin's PhD and Honours research on fisheries and whale entanglement. Grants: ARC DECRA, Advance Queensland, and others. Collaborations span institutions globally, focusing on dynamic ocean management and marine biodiversity preservation.
