Kyle P. Steele is an Associate Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Leadership, Literacy, and Social Foundations at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. He holds a Ph.D. in History and Educational Policy Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2017) and a B.A. in History from the University of Missouri-Columbia (2008). His research focuses on the history of the American high school, emphasizing equity and inclusivity challenges within educational systems. He has authored books such as Making a Mass Institution: Indianapolis and the American High School (2020) and is editing New Perspectives on the History of the Twentieth-Century American High School (under contract with Palgrave Macmillan).
Dr. Steele’s areas of expertise include the history of education, multicultural education, and education for social justice. He teaches courses like Foundations of Multicultural Education and Foundations of American Education. His work emphasizes connecting classroom practices to community contexts, particularly addressing systemic inequities in school systems.
His scholarship analyzes racial dynamics in educational institutions, curriculum development, and the role of youth culture in shaping educational outcomes. He has contributed to debates on school segregation, vocationalism, and the intersection of local policies with national educational trends.
