Kyle J. Popovich, MD, MS, FIDSA, is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases at Rush Medical College, Rush University. His research focuses on the epidemiology and prevention of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), particularly in community and correctional settings.

- Fellow, Infectious Diseases Society of America (FIDSA)
- NIAID K23 Awardee
- Principal Investigator, CDC Epicenter and R01 grants
Dr. Popovich's research centers on the transmission dynamics of community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA), with a focus on vulnerable populations including HIV-infected individuals and incarcerated persons. He pioneered the development of a phenotypic prediction rule to distinguish CA-MRSA from healthcare-associated strains using antibiotic susceptibility profiles. His work has demonstrated the spread of CA-MRSA into hospitals and its disproportionate impact on urban poor populations. He has extensively used genomic epidemiology and whole genome sequencing to map transmission networks in jails and other high-risk communities.
His recent publications highlight trends in infection prevention, including national guidelines for MRSA control, the role of contact precautions, and the use of chlorhexidine bathing in intensive care units. His research has informed national policy and clinical practice through involvement in SHEA/IDSA/APIC guidelines and the CDC STRIVE initiative.
Scientific Awards:
- SHEA Trainee Award (2009)
- SHEA Barry Farr Award (2010)
Dr. Popovich has served as principal investigator on multiple federally funded studies, including an NIAID K23 award and an R01 grant on MRSA in urban jails. He has collaborated with leading researchers such as Robert A. Weinstein and Mary K. Hayden. His work has been supported by the NIH, CDC, and institutional grants, emphasizing both patient-oriented research and translational applications in infection control.
He leads research in correctional health settings and has established genomic surveillance programs to track MRSA transmission. His laboratory integrates epidemiology, genomics, and public health to develop targeted interventions in high-risk communities.
