Kyle Dargan is an Associate Professor of Literature and Assistant Director of Creative Writing at American University in Washington, DC. He is also the founder and editor of POST NO ILLS magazine, Managing Editor for Janelle Monae's creative company Wondaland, and curator of the 'Life of a Poet' series at The Hill Center in Washington, D.C.
Education:
- MFA in Creative Writing from Indiana University
- BA in English Language and Literature from The University of Virginia
Dargan's creative and scholarly work centers on poetry that explores urban life, social justice, and race relations in America. His writing frequently addresses the stark contrasts between affluence and poverty, particularly through his daily experience commuting between Southeast DC (where he deliberately chooses to live with 22% unemployment) and American University (in an area with 3% unemployment). His poetry gives voice to urban youth experiences while challenging societal norms about race, class, and opportunity.
Analysis of Dargan's publications reveals a consistent thematic focus on contemporary American urban experience, with particular attention to race, class, and social inequality. His work spans from intimate personal narratives to broader social commentary, often using Washington, DC as both setting and metaphor for larger American societal divisions. While primarily known for poetry, his work also engages deeply with hip-hop culture as a literary influence and educational tool.
Scientific Awards:
- Cave Canem Poetry Prize
- Hurston/Wright Legacy Award
- Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize (2019)
- Longlisted for Pulitzer Prize in poetry (2019)

Dargan maintains an active role in mentoring emerging writers through partnerships with organizations like 826DC, Writopia Lab, and the Young Writers Workshop. He has collaborated with the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities to produce poetry programming at the White House and Library of Congress, bringing youth writers to read for Michelle Obama. His teaching extends to the Dodge Poetry high schools program, where he supports young writers from underserved communities.
As founder of POST NO ILLS magazine, Dargan has cultivated a platform for diverse artistic voices outside traditional academic channels. His curatorial work with the 'Life of a Poet' series demonstrates his commitment to democratizing poetry and making it accessible to broader audiences. Through his various roles, Dargan bridges academic literary circles with community-based arts initiatives, embodying his belief that poetry operates at the motivational level to inspire people to see the world differently.
