Kyle C Helms is an Associate Professor of Classics at St. Olaf College, specializing in Latin, Greek, and ancient Mediterranean studies. He teaches courses in both classical languages and English, including First Year Seminars using role-immersion games and a January Term program in Italy. His research focuses on ancient graffiti, papyri, and rhetorical theory, with notable contributions to the Ancient Graffiti Project and the Epigraphic Database Roma.
Helms holds a B.A. from the University of Florida (2008), M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati (2013/2016). His recent projects include a translation of medieval Latin texts about Scandinavian saints under contract with Dumbarton Oaks Medieval Library. His work has been funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and featured in The Daily Beast.
Research interests span Latin and Greek epigraphy, Safaitic graffiti analysis, and Cicero's rhetorical strategies. He has published in journals like Rhetorica, Journal of Roman Studies, and Chronique d'Égypte. Currently on sabbatical through August 2025, he maintains affiliations with interdisciplinary programs in Linguistic Studies.
Collaborative work includes editing over 250 inscriptions for critical editions and leading field teams in the Bay of Naples. His teaching emphasizes experiential learning through travel and immersive pedagogy.
