Kyle Bibby is a Professor and Wanzek Collegiate Chair in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences at the University of Notre Dame’s College of Engineering. He serves as Associate Department Chair and leads the GERM Lab, focusing on microbiology relevant to water quality and public health protection.
Education:
- Ph.D., Environmental Engineering, Yale University (2012)
- M.Phil., Environmental Engineering, Yale University (2010)
- M.S., Environmental Engineering, Yale University (2009)
- B.S., Civil Engineering and Geological Sciences, University of Notre Dame (2008)
Research explores the detection and fate of human pathogenic viruses in the environment, the microbiome of built environments, and microbial ecology in fossil-fuel impacted systems like hydraulic fracturing produced water. His work addresses biodegradation challenges in unconventional energy resources and CO2 leakage scenarios.
Recent publications (2017–2019) focus on microbial communities in fossil-fuel impacted environments, bioremediation strategies for produced water, and adaptations in CO2-leakage aquifers. These studies span environmental engineering, microbiology, and water quality management.
Dr. Bibby works with students and researchers including Bethany Oceguera-Johnson, Andrei Badilla Aguilar, William Chen, Xijiao Wang, Mariah Antunes do Nascimento (PhD), Sushil Dahal, and lab alumni.
