Dr. Shafeer Kalathil is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Sciences at Northumbria University, where he also serves as a Vice Chancellor’s Senior Fellow. He is a Fellow at the Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment (HBBE), a joint initiative between Newcastle and Northumbria Universities. His research focuses on microbial electrochemistry, bioinspired synthesis, and artificial photosynthesis for sustainable energy solutions.
Education: MSc in Chemistry, PhD in Chemical Engineering (2013).
Professional Background: Postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Tokyo (JSPS), KAUST, and Cambridge University (Marie Curie Fellowship).
Research Interests: Microbial fuel cells, electrocatalytic water oxidation, CO₂ conversion, and semi-artificial photosynthesis.
Awards: JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship (2013), Marie Curie Individual Fellowship (2018).
Current Projects: Leading the 'Living Bionic Leaf' project (2022–2026), funded by Johnson Matthey, to produce solar fuels from CO₂. Active in reviewing for RSC Advances and Frontiers in Microbiology.
Key Contributions: Developed biohybrid catalysts, engineered microbial systems for solar fuel production, and pioneered bacterial synthesis of graphene-based materials. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals for clean energy and environmental sustainability.
