Kyeong-Ok Chang is a Professor in Virology at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Kansas State University (K-State). She holds a DVM (1989) and MS (1991) from Seoul National University, and a PhD (1999) from The Ohio State University. Her research focuses on viral pathogenesis and the development of antiviral therapeutics targeting noroviruses and coronaviruses, including feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV). She collaborates with medicinal chemists, virologists, and structural biologists to design protease inhibitors with broad-spectrum activity against picornaviruses, caliciviruses, and coronaviruses.
Recent publications highlight her work on structure-based design of macrocyclic and oxazolidinone-based inhibitors of norovirus 3CL protease, demonstrating antiviral efficacy in animal models. Her group has advanced one compound to late-stage development against FIPV, showing success in infected cats. Research keywords include virology, medicinal chemistry, and structural biology, with sub-fields like norovirus protease inhibition, transition state inhibitors, and cross-virus therapeutic targets.
Her work is supported by collaborations and grants enabling preclinical testing and drug development. She has contributed to understanding viral entry mechanisms in pathogens such as porcine sapovirus and enterovirus D68, with applications in veterinary and human virology.
