Kwan Queenie Li is an interdisciplinary artist and lecturer at MIT's Department of Art, Culture, and Technology. She holds a BFA from the University of Oxford and a BBA from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, supported by HKSAR and the D.H. Chen Foundation. Her research explores post-colonialism, vegetative politics, and digital/generative art, often interrogating intersections of technology and socio-political structures. Li has exhibited globally, including the Venice Architecture Biennale (2021) and MIT's Wiesner Gallery. She is a recipient of the Stuart Morgan Prize, Enterprise Poets Prize, and the 2022 Schnitzer Prize in Visual Arts.
Her practice bridges performance, lens-based media, and writing. Notable works include No Humans in the City, but Weeds (2021), critiquing data-centre urbanism in Hong Kong, and Insomniac/Amnesiac (2021), a VR installation probing human-AI boundaries. Recent projects like O, Engraft You New (2024) examine medical ethics through stem cell transplantation narratives. Li’s teaching and research emphasize speculative fiction and interdisciplinary collaboration, supported by MIT’s Council for the Arts and Hong Kong Design Trust.
Awards and recognitions highlight her contributions to contemporary art and urban theory. Her work is featured in journals like AI & Society and collections such as Videotage’s Media Art Archive.
