Kurt Sylvan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Southampton, Faculty of Arts and Humanities. He has been a permanent faculty member since 2015, after joining in January 2014 as a post-doctoral lecturer in the Normativity: Epistemic and Practical project. He holds a PhD from Rutgers University, completed in 2014 under the supervision of Ernest Sosa, with committee members including Ruth Chang, Jonathan Dancy, Alvin Goldman, and Susanna Schellenberg.
His primary research interests include:
- Epistemology
- Kant and Contemporary Kantian Philosophy
- Philosophy of Practical Reason
- General Philosophy of Mind
- Philosophy of Neurodiversity
- Moral and Political Philosophy
Sylvan’s research centers on developing a Kantian account of epistemic normativity, which he calls Epistemic Kantianism, grounded in the idea that epistemic rationality constitutes respect for truth. He also investigates the nature of knowledge as a non-normative, world-presenting mental relation, with applications in classical Indian epistemology. His recent collaborative work explores neurodiversity’s implications for philosophy of mind and epistemology. He is currently finalizing a book, Respect for Truth: A Kantian Account of Theoretical Normativity, and co-editing a new edition of the Blackwell Companion to Epistemology.
His recent publications from 2021 to 2025 reveal a consistent trajectory in theoretical and practical normativity, with a focus on suspension of judgment, autonomy of knowledge, internalist epistemology, and critiques of instrumental rationality. These works span top journals such as Philosophical Studies, Analysis, Mind, and The Philosophical Review, as well as chapters in edited volumes.
His scientific contributions are recognized through sustained scholarly output, though no specific awards are mentioned in the provided text.
Sylvan supervises PhD students, including James Clark Ross, and is currently accepting new PhD applicants. He has taught across a broad range of areas, including history of philosophy, aesthetics, metaphysics, and philosophy of mind. He is also engaged in interdisciplinary research, particularly at the intersection of epistemology and neurodiversity, and collaborates with scholars such as Claire Field and Andrew Stephenson.
