Kurt Steinke is a Professor and Extension Specialist in Soil Fertility and Nutrient Management at the Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences, Michigan State University (MSU), within the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. He holds a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. from the University of Wisconsin and University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. His research focuses on improving ecological efficiency, refining nutrient management strategies, and evaluating environmental impacts in agricultural systems, with emphasis on phosphorus runoff, drought management, and cover crops.
Steinke teaches CSS480 (Soil Fertility and Nutrient Management) and leads the MSU Soil Fertility Research Program. His work integrates applied research and outreach across sugarbeet, corn, soybean, wheat, potato, and turfgrass systems. Key grants include a $750K USDA grant to mitigate crop PFAS uptake (2021) and a $611K grant exploring heavy metals in crops (2023). He collaborates with extension centers like Saginaw Valley and Montcalm Research.
Research trends in his publications emphasize precision agriculture, cover crop impacts, nitrogen use efficiency, and environmental stewardship. He advises on fertilizer recommendations, such as the Tri-State Fertilizer Guidelines, and engages in public outreach through field days and webinars. His labs and teams focus on soil health, nutrient cycling, and sustainable production.
