Jason Clark is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science at South Dakota State University (SDSU). He also serves as an SDSU Extension Soil Fertility Specialist, focusing on nutrient management strategies that balance crop productivity with environmental sustainability. His work integrates precision agriculture techniques and soil health principles to optimize fertilizer use efficiency.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Soil Nutrient Management, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (2018)
- M.S. in Plant Science, Utah State University (2014)
- B.S. in Agronomy, Utah State University (2011)
Research Interests: Dr. Clark’s program emphasizes soil fertility management, including nitrogen and phosphorus application timing, fertilizer placement technologies (e.g., Y-drop systems), and the role of cover crops in improving nutrient cycling. He evaluates how conservation practices like no-till farming and crop rotation influence soil health and reduce environmental impacts.
Key Projects:
- Optimizing nitrogen fertilizer rates using anaerobic mineralization tests and machine learning.
- Investigating early and late in-season nitrogen applications for corn production.
- Assessing the economic and agronomic impacts of cover crop composition in semi-arid regions.
Outreach & Extension: He develops soil sampling guidelines and fertilizer recommendations tailored to South Dakota’s cropping systems, addressing challenges like fallow syndrome and post-flooding soil management. His extension materials include practical guides on corn starter fertilizer practices and precision nutrient management.
