Kurt Kielsgaard Hansen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental and Resource Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), specializing in Materials & Durability. His research focuses on concrete technology, building materials, and sustainable construction practices with significant contributions to understanding material degradation mechanisms.
His primary research interests include:
- Alkali Silica Reaction in concrete structures
- Concrete durability and testing methods
- Building materials performance under environmental stressors
- Moisture management in building envelopes
- Sustainable construction materials
- Preservation of historical building techniques
Hansen's recent publications demonstrate a concentrated focus on concrete technology, particularly addressing alkali silica reaction (ASR) issues in concrete structures. His work spans both theoretical and practical aspects, including development of test methods like the DTU Concrete Prism Test, field investigations of concrete performance, and studies on protective treatments for concrete. His research directly contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to sustainable cities and communities and responsible consumption and production.
Hansen actively supervises PhD students including R. Stenholt-Jacobsen working on lime mortars for clay brick reuse, M. S. M. Lund on bridge durability, and R. A. Barbosa on alkali-silica reactions in reinforced concrete. His research has been supported by various funding bodies including the Danish Research Councils and regional development programs focused on climate adaptation in construction.
