Kunal Sen is a Professor of Development Economics at the Global Development Institute, University of Manchester, and Director of the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER). He holds concurrent roles as Research Fellow at IZA Bonn and member of ESRC Peer Review College (2015–2019). His research focuses on political economy, macroeconomics, and labor markets in developing countries, with a primary emphasis on India, East Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Key areas include inclusive growth, informal sectors, and manufacturing dualism.
Education: BA and MA in Economics from India, PhD in Economics. Previously affiliated with institutions like University of East Anglia, Massey University, and ANU.
Research Interests: Political economy determinants of growth, social exclusion, international trade impacts, and labor market dynamics. Recent work examines state-business relations in Africa/India and fiscal resource curse dynamics.
Awards: Sanjaya Lall Prize (2006), Dudley Seers Prize (2003). Over 118 publications, including books like The Political Economy of India’s Growth Episodes and The Process of Financial Liberalization in India.
Projects: Leads initiatives on taxation, domestic savings in SSA, and structural transformation. Collaborates with global institutions like IMF, World Bank, and Asian Development Bank.
Labs/Teams: Effective States and Inclusive Development (ESID) research center co-director. Active in UNU-WIDER’s policy-oriented research programs.
