Kunaal Sharma is an ETH Fellow at ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), holding a B.A. (2010) and Ph.D. (2017) in political science from Columbia University. Originally from New York, he conducts research at the intersection of religion, extremism, and political dynamics.
His primary research lines investigate mechanisms to reduce intolerance in conflict settings and analyze cross-national variations in clerical support for extremist politicians. His dissertation developed a theoretical framework on elite appeals against violence in ethnic conflict, demonstrating effectiveness in non-victimized groups but not victimized populations, with empirical validation through experiments and fieldwork in northern India's Sunni-Shia extremism context.
Sharma's work is supported by grants from the NSF, U.S. Institute of Peace, U.S. Department of State, Columbia University, ETH Zurich, and think tanks. He maintains active policy engagement through presentations to governmental bodies, intergovernmental organizations (including UN and OSCE), and think tanks, translating academic findings into practical conflict resolution strategies.
