Kumiko Tanaka is a distinguished Professor in the Department of Music at Osaka University of Arts, where she has served since 2002, progressing from Part-time Lecturer to her current position as full Professor since 2017. Born in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture, she graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts and studied under renowned mentors including Yujiro Ikeuchi (Professor Emeritus at Tokyo University of the Arts) and Edith Rouget (Professor Emeritus at Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris).
Professor Tanaka's research and creative focus centers on musical composition, with over 100 published works spanning multiple countries including Japan, France, and the Netherlands. Her compositions demonstrate remarkable diversity, ranging from culturally inspired pieces like 'Sanuki Rhapsody' and 'Andalusia' to programmatic works such as 'Scorpion' and 'Bronze Boar.' Her opera 'Fan Target' premiered in 2014 and was performed internationally in Bulgaria in 2018, showcasing her ability to create large-scale dramatic works.
Analysis of her publications reveals a consistent exploration of cultural identity through music, with works that bridge Japanese traditions with international influences.
