Kumiko Tabuchi is a Professor at the Faculty of Education and Integrated Arts and Sciences, Ochanomizu University, specializing in Japanese literature with a focus on medieval and women's literature. Her academic journey includes positions at Waseda University (1991-2008) and the National Institute of Japanese Literature (1994-2002).
Her research explores waka poetry's role in cultural transmission, gender dynamics in Heian/Medieval literature, and the educational function of texts for women. She analyzes anthologies like the Fūyō Wakashū and Hyakunin Isshu, examining authorship, compilation practices, and historical reception.
Tabuchi's recent publications focus on waka in narratives (Genji monogatari), gendered expressions in Towazugatari, and the evolution of female poets' roles. Her awards include the 2020 Kadokawa Genyoshi Prize and the 1993 Japan Classical Literature Society Award.
She has received multiple JSPS grants for projects like Anthology Compilation in Medieval Waka (2025-2029) and Waka as Women's Educational Texts (2013-2017), contributing to discourse on Japanese literary formation and transnational research collaborations.
