Kuang Sze Chiang

Kuang Sze Chiang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Faculty of Engineering. His research focuses on sensor technologies for structural health monitoring (SHM), smart infrastructure, and IoT applications. He has commercialized an optical fibre sensor educational kit and pioneered innovations in corrosion monitoring, wireless sensor networks, and concrete curing sensors. He is a co-founder of ConcreteAI.io, an IoT startup addressing construction industry challenges through early-age concrete strength monitoring.

Education qualifications include a BEng (1st Hons) from the University of Leeds (1995), PhD and MBA from the University of Liverpool and University of Leicester (2002–2003), and a Higher Education Teaching Certificate from Harvard University (2023). His teaching spans numerical methods, structural analysis, smart cities, and engineering professionalism, emphasizing design thinking and experiential learning.

Research interests include optical fibre sensors, wireless SHM systems, and pedagogical innovations such as role-playing and team-based learning. He has secured patents for load measurement systems, smart thermal paint, and landslide warning sensors. His work has been showcased at international conferences like the 20th International Plastic Optical Fibre Conference (Bilbao, Spain) and the Singapore Science Centre.

Recipient of multiple teaching awards including NUS Annual Teaching Excellence Awards (2017–2023), FoE Innovative Teaching Award (Gold), and the Singapore Millennium Foundation Postdoc Fellowship. He serves on the editorial board of Smart Materials Research and reviews for top journals like Sensors and Actuators A and Composite Science and Technology.
