Professor Kristyn Gorton is the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures at the University of Leeds, and holds the position of Professor of Film and Television within the School of Media and Communication. She joined the university in 2021 and previously served as Head of the School of Media and Communication until May 2023. Her research focuses on feminist media studies, emotion and affect theory, British television history, and discourses of care in contemporary culture. She has authored influential books including *Remembering British Television: Audience, Archive and Industry* (2019) and is currently writing a monograph on Sally Wainwright for Manchester University Press.
Her scholarship bridges historical analysis with contemporary cultural critique, examining how media representations shape societal understandings of gender, emotion, and regional identity. Recent work explores feminist resilience in dystopian series like *The Handmaid’s Tale*, heroic female protagonists in Sally Wainwright’s dramas, and the intersection of melodrama with care narratives in modern television.
Gorton supervises postgraduate researchers including Sarah Lahm, Clementine Vann-Alexander, and Yuzhuo Wang. Her research outputs span monographs, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles in journals such as *Critical Studies in Television*, *Journal of Popular Television*, and *Feminist Media Studies*. She actively engages with industry collaborations, particularly around BBC North initiatives and regional storytelling.
