Kristy Wilson Bowers is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Missouri, part of the College of Arts and Science. She specializes in early modern European history with a focus on Spain, particularly the history of medicine and science. Her research examines public health responses to epidemics in early modern Seville and the development of medical practices in sixteenth-century Spain.
Education includes a PhD and MA from Indiana University (Bloomington) and a BA from George Mason University. Prior to joining Missouri in 2015, she taught at Northern Illinois University and institutions across the US, including Hawaii, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.
Her research interests emphasize the intersection of medicine, politics, and society in early modern Spain. She has published on plague management, medical innovation, and the social dimensions of public health. Current projects include a book on sixteenth-century learned surgeons.
Teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses, including the history of epidemics, the Scientific Revolution, and Spain’s imperial era. Courses also explore maritime history (pirates) and medieval science.
