Dr. Kristy Nielson is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Marquette University, with affiliations in the Cognitive Science and Neuroscience programs. She leads the Aging, Imaging and Memory (AIM) Lab and holds roles in the Integrative Neuroscience Research Center and the Medical College of Wisconsin’s CTSI. Her research focuses on cognitive aging, Alzheimer’s disease, neuroimaging, and the role of exercise in cognitive health.
Education: Ph.D., Southern Illinois University (1992); Post-doctoral training at UC Irvine’s Institute for Brain Aging and Dementia (1993-1996).
Research interests include memory, attention, dementia, and the psychobiology of aging. She investigates neuroimaging biomarkers (fMRI, EEG) for Alzheimer’s prediction, emotional processing deficits (alexithymia), and exercise interventions to mitigate cognitive decline.
Notable contributions include over 100 peer-reviewed articles in journals like Annual Review of Psychology, NeuroImage, and Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. Her work bridges neuroscience, psychology, and clinical practice, emphasizing translational research to improve aging outcomes.
Awards include the 2018 Haggerty Research Excellence Award and editorial roles in Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease and Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience. Funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), her grants support studies on genetic risk, neural compensation, and cognitive interventions.
