Kristina Cammen is an Associate Professor of Marine Mammal Science at the University of Maine's School of Marine Sciences. Her research focuses on ecological and evolutionary genomics, conservation biology, and ocean health, particularly in marine mammal species. She leads the Cammen Lab, which uses molecular and analytical approaches to study stressors affecting marine species, including anthropogenic impacts and natural environmental changes.
Education: Ph.D. in Ecology (Duke University, 2014), M.Phil. in Zoology (University of Cambridge, 2008), B.S. in Biology and Psychology (University of Maryland, 2007).
Research emphasizes genomic tools for non-model organisms, with a 'one health' perspective integrating human, wildlife, and ecosystem health. Key projects include eDNA applications for marine mammal studies, seal stranding analysis, and kelp forest ecology. She teaches courses like Conservation and Ecology of Marine Mammals and advances interdisciplinary approaches in marine science.
Notable achievements include the 2021 University of Maine Faculty Impact Award for mentoring. Her lab collaborates with organizations like NOAA and the Center for Coastal Studies, and her students have contributed to studies on pinniped genetics, eDNA dynamics, and river restoration impacts.
