Dr. Debbie Russell is a Senior Research Fellow at the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) in the School of Biology at the University of St Andrews. Her research focuses on the interactions between marine mammals (seals and seabirds) and their changing environments, particularly in contexts involving human activities like renewable energy development and climate change. She investigates how species balance ecological needs with anthropogenic pressures, such as noise pollution from offshore constructions and habitat fragmentation caused by marine infrastructure.
Key research areas include assessing impacts of offshore wind farms, tidal turbines, and oil/gas installations on marine ecosystems. She develops predictive models of seal behavior and habitat use to inform conservation strategies and policy. Her work bridges ecology, conservation biology, and engineering through interdisciplinary collaboration, including roles in international workshops (e.g., NAMMCO-ICES) and government advisory reports.
Dr. Russell’s studies emphasize long-term monitoring of species like grey and harbor seals, analyzing population dynamics, genetic connectivity, and physiological responses to environmental stressors. Her contributions address practical challenges like reducing tagging impacts on marine animals and optimizing marine protected area design using advanced tracking technologies.
