Kristin Scheible, M.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics (Neonatology) and Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. She serves as a neonatologist at UR Medicine providing clinical care to newborns while leading an active research program focused on neonatal immunology and microbiome development. As part of the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) team, Dr. Scheible has a special interest in caring for babies with persistent pulmonary hypertension.
Dr. Scheible completed her medical education at the University of Rochester School of Medicine/Dentistry in 2004, followed by a Pediatrics residency (2004-2007) and Neonatology fellowship (2007-2010), all at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Her educational background includes undergraduate honors in Anthropology and German studies.
Dr. Scheible's research focuses on understanding how premature birth disrupts normal T cell development and the clinical consequences of abnormal immune development during infancy. Her lab employs high-parameter flow cytometric and high-throughput sequencing approaches to investigate T cell receptor, cytokine signaling, and functional differences in developing immune cells. She has discovered that premature infants exist in a clinical paradox where their T cells are able to activate but not protect against infections. A major finding from her lab demonstrated that the co-development of the gut microbiome, respiratory system, and immune system directly impacts infant respiratory health. Her research spans molecular mechanisms of immune development to population-level studies examining environmental exposures.
Dr. Scheible has received numerous awards including the American Thoracic Society Abstract Award (2017), University of Rochester Bronze Star (2014), multiple Patient-and Family-Centered Care Awards (2012-2013), and the University of Rochester Strong Star (2011-2016). She also received the prestigious Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (2008-2011) and has been recognized for excellence throughout her academic career dating back to undergraduate studies.
As Principal Investigator of the Scheible Lab, she mentors several graduate students including Darline Castro-Melendez (Ph.D. Candidate studying PFAS exposure and neonatal immunity) and Janiret Narvaez-Miranda (Ph.D. Candidate investigating infant gut microbiome and vaccine responses). Her lab participates in major research consortia including the Prematurity and Respiratory Outcomes Program (PROP) and the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program. Dr. Scheible collaborates extensively with researchers across disciplines including Neonatology, Obstetrics, Infectious Diseases, Microbiology, Immunology, Genetics, Biostatistics, and Computational Biology.
The Scheible Lab operates within the University of Rochester Medical Center's Department of Pediatrics, conducting translational research that bridges basic science discoveries with clinical applications for neonatal care. Current projects include gene regulatory profiling optimized for minimal sample input, investigating neurobiological consequences of microbiome trajectories, examining roles of CD8+ T cell microRNAs, and studying alternate mechanisms of immune protection against novel infections during infancy.
